On November 4, 2025, Californians will head to the polls for a special election. On the ballot: Proposition 50, a proposed constitutional amendment that could shape the way congressional districts are drawn in California for the second half of this decade.
What Is Proposition 50?
Proposition 50 asks voters to temporarily replace the congressional district map drawn by an independent commission with a new map designed by the Legislature.
Why Now?
California’s Prop 50 is a direct response to Texas’ approach. In Texas, the NAACP recently filed a federal lawsuit alleging that the state’s newly approved electoral map strips Black voters of their political power. This practice—known as gerrymandering—is when district boundaries are manipulated to weaken the voting strength of certain groups.
When and How to Vote
🗳️ Election Day is Tuesday, November 4, 2025
- Vote early: Early voting begins in mid-October at designated county sites.
- Vote by mail: All registered voters will automatically receive a ballot in the mail. Ballots must be postmarked by November 4 and received by November 11.
- Vote in person: Polls will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM on Election Day.
